# Electric Bike Battery Basics: What Are These Volts & Amp Hours?

Electric bikes are very attractive for bikers looking forward to switch or upgrade their conventional bikes. However, when you go for buying the dealer asks you about your recommendations regarding volts, hours, amps, and watts requirements. You look at them like alien as you don’t have any idea what they are talking about.

You are not insane neither the e-bikes dealer but just a little foreign regarding these terminologies. So, here I have brought you some handy lines that will give you a good idea regarding these terms as well as what you need to look for while buying electric bikes.

**Volts:**

**Volts:**

Volt is the system international unit that we use to disclose, describe, or explain the power of current. Hence, here volts can be called as the power of your bike. It is denoted by the capital form of alphabet V. When it comes to the volts of your electric bike, this is simply power its battery can hold. The electric bike battery power comes as 24 V, 36 V, 48 V, and 72 V respectively or irrespectively.

“More volts a battery has better power it will offer.”

For further explanation, another analogy is used and as water is made of electricity hence electricity is water. It means, batteries contain fluids and when the battery has more volt power, they have smaller tubes and the fluid would move faster through these smaller tubes.

**Bikes Buying Guide With Respect to Volts:**

In typical bikes, mostly 36 Volts batteries are used because they are cost effective yet provide sufficient power to the bike to run. However, 24 V and 48 V batteries enriched bikes are also available and somehow cost effective.

Moreover, if you need a bike with larger volt power as in 72 volts, you cannot find a ready to ride bike. Therefore, you will have to move towards buying custom made bikes. Besides this, you will have to more price for a bike like this because they are made in exclusive ways and larger batteries cost high. Besides being expensive, there are safety concerns attached to electric bikes. There are chances of getting static shocks while riding these bikes on rough roads and in rough conditions. Any battery with volt power more than 45 comes with safety hazard.

Why does it happen?

**Amps or Amperes:**

**Amps or Amperes:**

Ampere is another base unit of the electric current and important thing to know when you are buying E-Bikes. Here, ampere means for how long you can ride your bike the more amperes you have the extended time you will have on your bikes. It is denoted by small alphabets ah while abbreviated as Amps.

**Bikes Buying Guide With Respect to Amps:**

When it comes to buying your electric bike and checking for the volts, here you will have to check for the manufacturer’s claim as well as the description given on the bike. You can see the description of amps written along the volts such as 36 V and 10 ah. With this power, you get a mileage as 25 miles. However, the same described bile may give another person a mileage of 50. Here, the variation appears because of the car terminology that’s offered per gallon wise. However, sometimes, bile dealers and manufacturer companies exaggerate about the mileage. It happens because of the assist settings. Assists are inversely proportional to mileage that means with more assists you will have lower range and vice versa. You can also increase your mileage with paddling. Besides, a 15 ah amps enriched bike can enhance the mileage too.

**Watts:**

**Watts:**

Watt is also a system international unit of current and to understand this you can call it the total energy pack that your battery has. Watts are made by combining the volts, amps, and other power etc. Here, you need to understand that watts are not explained in the bike specifications in a separate way. I have designed a formula by using which you can better understand what we call as the watt or watt hours.

Volts power x Ampere (Amps) hours = watt hours

It means when volts power will be into with amps, the amount we get will be the watt hours and that’s the total energy pack of your battery. Hence, it varies when here comes any change in amps or the volts of the battery.

Here is an example by using which you will better understand the function of watts in a bike.

Example: Suppose you have two bikes with different battery powers such as bike one comes with 24 V into 20 AH specifications while the bike two comes with 48 V and 10 AH battery. Now, to calculate watt hours, we will have to use the aforementioned formula that is:

Volts power x Ampere (Amps) hours = watt hours

By putting values in it:

Bike 1: 24 V x 20 ah = 480 watt hours

Bike 2: 48 V x 10 ah = 480 watt hours

You see that a typical changed ratio of the volts and amps can give you similar watt hours.

**Buying Guide With Respect To Watts:**

When you purchase a bike with watt hours more than 250 watts, you will have to get your bike registered, apply for the license, and get an insurance for it. If you will not do so, you will not be able take your bike on road and if you will, you would be charged with fine and penalties.

**Bottom Line:**

**Bottom Line:**

S0, this is all about the electric bikes, their terminologies and the things you need to consider while buying these bikes. Here, I would also suggest you that get a company with a good reputation and don’t forget to take a test drive before making a purchase. By doing so, you will be able to understand that the bike is suitable for you and you can handle it or not. It will also tell you that the readings given on the bike are true or not.
